N.W.T. officially ending seasonal time changes

The Northwest Territories is joining other parts of Canada in ending seasonal time changes.

Beginning Nov. 1, the N.W.T. will end the practice of changing its clocks twice a year, with its permanent time standard, known as Northwest Territories Time, observed year-round, the territory said in a news release on Wednesday.

"Ending seasonal time change gives residents what they've asked us for. Through various feedback and engagement opportunities, residents expressed support for eliminating the practice of changing clocks twice a year," Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson said.

"This change provides greater consistency for people, families, organizations, and businesses across the territory," he added.

The decision was made following public feedback gathered by the territorial government through an online survey involving 3,500 residents four years ago.

The N.W.T. government said over 87% supported ending the practice of changing clocks twice a year, with many preferring to keep Mountain Daylight Time year-round.

The territory's announcement came a week after Manitoba's government said it was ditching seasonal time changes in the province, making daylight saving time permanent.

N.W.T. also joins B.C. and Alberta in recently ending the semi-annual clock changes.

B.C. residents made their final time "spring forward" last March, when they moved their clocks ahead by an hour.

Come next month, Alberta residents' clocks won't "fall back," as the province officially adopts permanent daylight time.

Yukon stopped the practice six years ago and is on Mountain Standard Time year-round, while Saskatchewan stopped the seasonal time changes in 1966.
