Ottawa puts $15M toward improvements on Dempster Highway

Funds will go toward replacing three culverts along Highway 8

The federal government says millions of dollars have been set aside to improve parts of the Dempster Highway.

On Friday, Ottawa announced $15 million would go to replace three aging culverts on the 740-kilometre highway, which connects the Klondike Highway in the Yukon to Inuvik, N.W.T.

The culverts in question are located near kilometre markers 40, 147 and 266.

The funding comes through the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure stream of Ottawa’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, a news release said.

The program aims to support projects that improve infrastructure for rural and northern communities.

Under the program 36 infrastructure projects have been announced in the N.W.T. Ottawa said it's contributed more than $176.5 million, with more than $31.3 million coming from territorial, municipal and Indigenous governments.
