Ottawa removes counter-tariffs on seafood, fish products

Reversal follows feedback from industry, Finance Canada says

Finance Canada says it is removing seafood and fish products from its list of counter-tariffs, after receiving feedback from Canadian industries, in order to protect against broader economic harm.

Finance Canada issued a statement about the changes late Wednesday evening. No further details were released.

Ottawa's initial response to the latest tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, which it spelled out on Tuesday, include raising duties on American steel and aluminum products from 25 to 50 per cent.

It will also impose tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 per cent on hundreds of other U.S. exports, including clothing and apparel, appliances and dairy products.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer has stated on several occasions that if there is further Canadian retaliation, the Trump administration will not sit idly by and take it.
