Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to shatter a new record on June 10 when he will surpass Jawaharlal Nehru to become India's longest-serving elected continuous Prime Minister.

PM Modi will complete 4,399 consecutive days in office on June 10, 2026, overtaking Nehru's record of 4,398 days as an elected Prime Minister.

Modi first took office on May 26, 2014, and has remained in power continuously through three consecutive terms. Nehru's elected tenure stretched from May 13, 1952, to May 27, 1964.

Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ranks third on the list of longest continuous tenures by an elected Prime Minister, having served 4,077 consecutive days between January 24, 1966, and March 24, 1977.

The milestone adds to another longevity record already held by PM Modi.

PM Modi has spent more than 8,930 days in elected executive office if we combine his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and Prime Minister since 2014.

That places him ahead of Nehru, who spent 6,130 days in elected executive office as Prime Minister between 1947 and 1964. Nehru never served as a chief minister.

Overall too, PM Modi is the longest serving elected head of government in the history of Independent India. In March 2026, he overtook Pawan Kumar Chamling, who held office as chief minister of Sikkim for 8,930 days.

The latest milestone will further cement Modi's position as the longest-serving leader in elected executive office in independent India's history, reflecting a political career that has spanned more than two decades in top executive roles.
