Prime Minister Carney speaks with Prime Minister of Singapore Lawrence Wong

Today, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, spoke with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.

The leaders underscored the importance of a stronger Canada-Singapore partnership in a rapidly changing world.

Canadian exports to Singapore have more than doubled in the last five years. The prime ministers discussed opportunities to advance that trade relationship, including through the recently announced negotiations for a Canada-Singapore Economic Partnership Framework. They also discussed redoubling their focus on concluding negotiations for a Canada-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement. Once in force, this agreement will lower trade barriers, expand market access, and create more predictable conditions for businesses in Canada and ASEAN. It is expected to add nearly $2 billion to Canada’s GDP and create nearly 14,000 Canadian jobs, including in agriculture and manufacturing.

Prime Minister Carney also highlighted opportunities to expand Singaporean investment in Canada’s artificial intelligence ecosystem and energy sector.

Prime Minister Carney looked forward to welcoming Prime Minister Wong to Canada later this year to further strengthen cooperation.

The leaders agreed to remain in close contact.
