Renault Expands openR link Capabilities With Google Gemini Generative AI Upgrade

This generative artificial intelligence offensive started hitting Renault vehicles in Europe on June 15, 2025, through an over-the-air software update. Switching from Assistant to Gemini aims to kill the formulaic voice commands from the olden days of Google in favor of more natural conversation. Best of all for customers, the upgrade package is free of charge.

Built natively on Google technology, the openR link infotainment system has routinely been regarded as one of the better in-car media solutions since its 2022 debut in the Megane E-Tech compact electric hatchback. The integration of Gemini shifts the goalposts from the previous simple command recognition capability to context-aware processing.

According to Renault, the more capable assistant is capable of comprehending the underlying intent behind multi-layered requests. In other words, Renault drivers no longer have to memorize clinical syntax to change the HVAC settings or plot a multi-stop route. Instead, casual speak is more than sufficient for the system to execute tasks based on situational context.

In practice, the generative intelligence chatbot and virtual assistant previously known as Bard processes the nuance of the request. Gemini can further calculate navigation paths that bypass specific infrastructure, updating Maps dynamically for the sat-nav system to use only the latest data.

In the attached release, Renault is quick to emphasize that its Gemini implementation goes deeper than phone mirroring. While Android Auto brings a baseline of connectivity to the dashboard, having native Gemini integrating with the openR link system grants the AI direct access to the underlying data bus and even the mechanical systems.

Gemini can monitor hardware telemetry, including real-time battery status and the remaining estimated range in Renault's battery-electric vehicle lineup. Said information is used to dynamically calculate charging stops during route planning. Drivers can also directly manipulate physical vehicle functions that include the ambient lighting and radio.

The openR link Gemini ecosystem hooks into the user's primary Google account, resulting in bi-directional data sharing. Preferences and search queries logged while on the road are neatly synchronized with other devices, maintaining continuity from home to the cockpit and back.

In the first instance, Gemini covers 13 languages, including the automaker's native French. Given time, subsequent over-the-air updates will introduce Gemini Live capability into the cabin, enabling more advanced conversational interactions. With Gemini Live, users can switch back and forth between different languages mid-conversation without confusing the algorithm.
