Serious crash closes M53 motorway

The M53 motorway in the Wirral has been closed due to a serious crash, with motorists warned to expect delays.

Merseyside Police said the collision happened just after 03:30 BST at junction 4 in Clatterbridge.

The force confirmed the motorway has been closed in both direction between junctions 4 and 5 at Hooton in Cheshire.

A police spokesperson said the closure was expected to be in place "for several hours and drivers are advised to monitor traffic services prior to embarking on any journey".
