Metrolinx says some GO services may be impacted

Thunderstorms and rain are expected to impact commuters in the Greater Toronto Area Wednesday afternoon and into the evening, despite earlier weather warnings being lifted.

"Starting this afternoon, there is potential for severe thunderstorms, hail, and strong wind gusts," said Metrolinx in a news release Wednesday. "As a result of weather conditions, some trips may be impacted."

According to Environment Canada, Toronto could see 20 to 30 millimetres of rain.

Special weather statements for regions across the GTA were lifted Wednesday morning after Environment Canada had earlier warned of severe thunderstorms in Durham and fog in Mississauga.

Nevertheless, in a social media post, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the city is activating its emergency management task force in anticipation of rain. She advised residents to check that their downspouts are draining properly and are away from the building to help prevent flooding.

Regions in Durham including Lindsay, Markham, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa were earlier expected to be impacted by a line of severe thunderstorms moving in from the east at Pleasant Point, Seagrave and Dickson Hill, Environment Canada said in its alert.

"Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail. Don't drive through flooded roadways," a previous warning from Environment Canada stated.
