Toronto Humane Society closed after vandalism: spokesperson
The Toronto Humane Society was closed Saturday after what the non-profit organization said was an act of vandalism.
The incident occurred at the society's 11 River Street location at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday, the society's spokesperson Lucas Solowey said in a statement.
No staff or animals were harmed, Solowey told CBC Toronto.
Due to the emergency, the shelter would be closed Saturday and its services unavailable, the society said on Facebook.
"We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding," it said. "We look forward to welcoming you back when services resume."
Officers responded shortly before 10:30 a.m. for reported damage to a window, Toronto Police Service spokesperson Shannon Eames said.
Police were unable to confirm the cause of the damage, but it was possibly from a rock, she told CBC Toronto,
No one was inside and there were no reported injuries, Eames confirmed, adding there are no suspect descriptions currently available.
With an investigation underway, Solowey said the society would not be giving further information until it is appropriate to share an update.
The investigation would seek to determine if the incident was targeted, Toronto police spokesperson Cindy Chung said Saturday afternoon.
