Trump Floats New Names For Artificial Intelligence, Asks Public To Vote
US President Donald Trump has questioned the name “Artificial Intelligence” and asked the public to vote on alternative names for the rapidly developing technology.
Trump raised the issue in a post on his social media platform on Sunday, arguing that the term may not accurately describe the capabilities of artificial intelligence.
“Many people think that the words ‘Artificial Intelligence’ are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence,” Trump wrote.
He proposed three alternative names for the technology: “Superior Intelligence”, “Extreme Intelligence” and “Supreme Intelligence.”
Trump said the alternatives were intended to provide what he considered a more accurate and elegant description of the technology.
“A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI),” he said.
He described the development of AI as an expanding technological transformation and invited his followers to choose which name they preferred.
“This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting!” Trump wrote.
He asked users to consider which of the proposed names should be used for what he described as the technology’s ongoing “Revolution.”
Trump’s proposal comes as artificial intelligence continues to expand across sectors, including technology, business, government and communications, with governments and companies investing heavily in its development and deployment.
The US president did not indicate that any formal change to the term “Artificial Intelligence” was being considered by his administration.
Instead, his post presented the three alternatives as options in a public poll and asked users to decide which description they considered most appropriate.
