Ukrainian school children study at huge shelter
Children at a school in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv are more often taking classes at a huge shelter that can accommodate 1,000 people amid continuing attacks by Russian forces.
The shelter was completed at the end of last year at the school that teaches 600 children from the first to 12th grades. The students and teachers immediately evacuate when an air defense warning is issued.
The shelter is arranged in multiple sections with desks and chairs. The students take classes and can exercise there too.
The facility is available also for nearby residents and nursery school children. The locals say it has become an essential evacuation site amid intensifying Russian attacks.
A 32-year-old mother said using the shelter is the best option because her child is safe while receiving a quality education. She added, of course, parents would prefer normal classes at a regular school if there were no war.
The school's principal said children can use the shelter not only for lessons but also to socialize, so the facility also helps them mentally.
