Victoria councillor calls for halt to Canada Post job, service cuts

Planned cuts to Canada Post mean poor service, loss of jobs, and one city councillor hopes her peers will agree to lobby the feds for more consultation before impending changes.

Victoria Coun. Susan Kim hopes to see the mayor formally write to the federal government calling for a halt to planned service cuts and asking that any mandate review be done through a thorough, transparent public review inclusive across the nation.

“These changes were announced before a full public review of Canada Post’s mandate and without meaningful consultation with the communities that will be most affected,” reads a motion up for discussion during the Oct. 8 committee meeting. “If these changes go ahead, millions of households could lose door-to-door delivery, thousands of good jobs could disappear, and some communities could see their local postal services reduced or lost altogether. Seniors, people with disabilities, and residents of rural, remote, Northern, and Indigenous communities may be especially affected.”

Kim also hopes the letter would seek an immediate review, ahead of the federal government releasing Canada Post’s plans and allowing their implementation of community mailboxes – predicted to have negative impacts on the residents of Victoria.

The letter would also be copied to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

“Canada Post is an important public service that many Canadians rely on every day. The federal government has announced major changes to postal services, including ending door-to-door mail delivery for many households, reducing service standards, removing protections that have helped prevent post office closures, and cutting thousands of postal jobs,” the motion reads.

It appears on the Oct. 8 committee meeting, with potential for “same-day consideration” at the following council meeting.
