Virginia Tech Hokies News: Football snub, unsurprising recruiting setback, MLB heater
Going into the 2026 season, the Virginia Tech football team will have a new-look roster under James Franklin. As is the case every year, but more so when there is a coaching change, there is some roster turnover.
However, despite the Hokies adding several pieces out of the Transfer Portal, Pro Football Focus didn't place any Hokies on its Top 50 players for the 2026 campaign. Not one. Truth be told, that really isn't a surprise, but there was one player who could have found himself on the list.
Who could have cracked the Top 50 for PFF? On the defensive side, cornerback Jaquez White, a Troy transfer, is someone who could have been there. PFF recently named one of the Top 5 ball hawks coming back next season to college. It'll be his first season in Blacksburg.
However, this might be the only season where the Hokies are omitted from the Top 50 list at PFF. Next season, depending on returns and who potentially leaves, there be one or two Hokies on the list.
Women's basketball loses out on a four-star recruit
Megan Duffy and Virginia Tech were in the mix for Class of 2027 four-star forward Sydney Mobley, along with Illinois and Ohio State. The Sunury, Ohio, native averaged 20.3 points, nine rebounds, and 2.5 assists a game last winter. In the end, it shouldn't have been surprising where she decided to go.
Mobley committed to Ohio State, saying, "I was born and raised a Buckeye, so I will always be a Buckeye. Go Bucks.'' This fall, there will likely be some big visits for recruits on campus for Duffy and her staff in the Class of 2027.
TJ Rumfield powers Rockies over Giants
Former Virginia Tech slugger TJ Rumfield is coming off winning his second straight National League Rookie of the Month award in June. He is off to another hot start in July. On Sunday in Colorado's 7-6 win over the San Francisco Giants, Rumfield had three hits and scored two runs. He is turning into a building block for the future in Denver.
