Today is a big day for Canada at the 2026 World Cup, as it is the first time the men’s team has advanced into the round of 16.
Canada is aiming to be the 5th CONCACAF team to reach the quarter-finals, after Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico and the USA.
Canada will play against Morocco at 10 a.m. PT in Houston, Texas.
The last time Canada and Morocco met in the World Cup was in 2022 during the group stage, when Morocco defeated Canada 2-1.
The second match of the day is Paraguay taking on France at 2 p.m. in Philadelphia.
To celebrate the United States’ 250th Independence Day, FIFA has added pre-match celebrations to both matches, including the singing of the U.S. national anthem. Although both matches are played in the States, the U.S.A. is not playing today (July 4), but is playing on Monday against Belgium.
The winners of Friday’s matches were: after a 1-1 draw, Egypt won 4-2 on penalties; Argentina won 3-2 after extra time, and Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0.
Cabo Verde had the 2022 World Cup champions on their toes, making the game go into a second half of extra time.
A corner kick by Argentina’s Lionel Messi was headed by Cristian Romero and deflected off Cape Verde’s Diney Borges into the back of the net in the 111th minute, giving Argentina a 3-2 lead, which they held onto until the final whistle.

Cabo Verde’s Pico Lopes told the media after the match that when Sidny Lopes Cabral scored the equalizing goal in the 103rd minute, he felt that the team could win the match. Unfortunately, that did not happen.
“But look what we achieved once they showed what was possible for small nations with big hearts that, like, if you believe and dream, anything is possible. I hope this team here now has inspired some young Cabo Verdens to be here next year. We showed what’s possible. We show what you can do when you reach this stage and play with some of the best teams in the world,” Lopes said.
“France have scored 149 goals in FIFA World Cup history. Only Brazil, Germany and Argentina have reached the landmark of 150,” according to FIFA.
