Bomb threat prompts evacuation for parts of downtown Halifax, man arrested

An evacuation order for parts of downtown Halifax that was prompted by an alleged bomb threat has been lifted.

Halifax Regional Police said at 2 p.m. that there was no ongoing threat in the city’s downtown and all roads previously closed were now open.

Earlier on Monday, police said at about 8:45 a.m. Monday that the Purdy’s Wharf parkade had been evacuated due to a suspicious vehicle being searched as part of its response to a threat. Police said in their afternoon update that a small police presence would remain in the parkade.

A man was arrested on Thomas Raddall Drive near the Canada Games Centre and accused of making the threat.

Police had originally asked the public to avoid the area where the man was arrested, and a short time later announced the closure of multiple streets downtown due to the investigation.

Businesses and pedestrians in these areas had been ordered to leave, but can now reopen.

Police said more information will be released when available.
