Experts confirm tornado touched down in Winnipeg's Whyte Ridge area Monday

Tornado that hit area during storm has received preliminary EF-1 rating

A tornado touched down in southwestern Winnipeg during Monday night's storm, officials from the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University have confirmed.

The tornado carved a narrow path of destruction in the Whyte Ridge area, damaging roofs and uprooting trees, NTP experts said Tuesday.

It has been given a preliminary EF-1 rating — the second-lowest rank on the enhanced Fujita scale used to categorize tornado severity based on damage caused.

EF-1 rated tornadoes typically have wind speeds between 135 to 175 kilometers per hour, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Environment Canada said no injuries were reported and further investigation is pending.
