FM Khanal calls for modern Nepal-India ties, development
KATHMANDU, June 7: Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal has said Nepal places its relationship with neighboring India at the highest priority.
Speaking during a bilateral meeting with a delegation led by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi on Saturday evening, Khanal stressed Nepal's commitment to strengthening ties with India.
During the talks, Khanal said Nepal and India share more than just a historical relationship. He noted that his party had received a clear and decisive mandate to pursue economic transformation and result-driven diplomacy.
“Nepal attaches the highest priority to its relationship with India. Under the new government, we are prepared to engage at the highest possible level with clear objectives and a strong sense of purpose,” Khanal said.
Stating that his party carries none of the political baggage of the past, he said the government is firmly committed to building a transformative relationship with its closest neighbor and most important partner.
Khanal also referred to an article published in Hindustan Times during the recent India visit of Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, saying the government is committed to advancing that same vision.
He said Nepal wants to transform Nepal-India relations into a modern, development-oriented partnership.
Khanal began his remarks by conveying greetings from Prime Minister Balen Shah to the government and people of India.
He also praised India’s support during various disasters and during the crisis in West Asia.
Highlighting India’s importance to Nepal’s economy, Khanal said, “You have consistently supported Nepal by ensuring the supply of essential commodities such as fuel and fertilizers. On behalf of the government and people of Nepal, I would like to express our gratitude for this assistance.”
