Gusto and France’s World Cup dream over | News | Official Site
France, for whom Malo Gusto was an unused substitute, were beaten 2-0 by Spain in the World Cup semi-final in Dallas on Tuesday.
It means our right-back will not be following in the footsteps of former Blues Frank Leboeuf, Marcel Desailly, N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud by lifting the biggest prize of all for France while a Chelsea player.
Spain were worthy winners in Texas and scored in either half through a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty, awarded for a foul on Lamine Yamal, and a confident Pedro Porro finish at the end of a slick move.
France’s vaunted attack misfired with Spain’s defence and central midfielders showing why the European champions have been so hard to breach in recent years.
Gusto finishes the World Cup with four appearances to his name, all off the bench. He will hope to feature in the third-place play-off against either Argentina or England on Saturday. Spain will play the winner of tomorrow’s semi-final in New Jersey on Sunday.
