Netflix doubles down on South Indian cinema with weekly film premieres
Netflix India plans to premiere an average of one South Indian film every week for the rest of 2026, signalling a deeper push into Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam cinema as regional-language content continues to drive viewership on the platform. The move follows what Netflix described as a strong first half of the year for South Indian films on the service.
The streaming giant said its upcoming slate will include a mix of theatrical acquisitions and original productions. Among the major titles lined up are Ram Charan's Peddi, Dhanush's OM – Chapter 1: Udhiram, Vijay Deverakonda's Ranabaali and Nani's Paradise. Romantic drama Pyaar Prema Kalyanam is scheduled to premiere on August 21.
The announcement reflects the growing importance of regional cinema in India's streaming ecosystem. South Indian films have increasingly emerged as some of the most watched titles on OTT platforms, with audiences extending far beyond their original language markets.
Netflix cited the performance of Made in Korea as evidence of that trend. The film became the first South Indian title to reach the top spot on Netflix's Global Non-English Films chart and featured in the Top 10 rankings across 54 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Korea and Taiwan.
Alongside licensed films, Netflix is also expanding its original South Indian programming. Upcoming projects include films such as Stephen and Takshakudu, as well as series including The Game, billed as Netflix's first Tamil original series, and Super Subbu, its first Telugu original series.
The strategy comes as competition intensifies among streaming platforms for regional-language content. South Indian films have become a key battleground for Netflix, Prime Video, JioHotstar and ZEE5, driven by strong theatrical performance and growing interest from international audiences.
According to Netflix, South Indian titles appeared in its Global Top 10 Non-English Films list for 39 weeks during 2025, more than double their presence compared with 2023. The company also said South Indian films reached Top 10 rankings in 59 countries outside India last year, up from 26 countries in 2024 and 17 countries in 2023.
Netflix added that since 2023, it has licensed at least half of the top 10 highest-grossing Tamil and Telugu films each year. It also said a South Indian film has featured in Netflix India's Top 10 films list every week since 2025.
