Peel Public Health investigating measles exposure on June 13

Peel Public Health says it is investigating an exposure linked to a confirmed case of measles on June 13.

In a news release Sunday, Peel Public Health said passengers on flights ET552 Addis Ababa to Toronto and Air Canada AC410 Toronto to Montreal may have been exposed to the virus. Travellers who were in Terminal 1 of Pearson International Airport between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on June 13 could have also been exposed.

"Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily to those who are not immunized or have not previously had measles," the public health agency said in its release.

Peel Public Health is advising travellers to check their immunization records and ensure they have two doses of measles vaccinations (MMR or MMRV). Anyone born prior to 1970 is considered protected against measles, according to the public health agency.

Peel Public Health is also urging anyone experiencing symptoms, such as a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, sensitivity to light or a rash lasting between four to seven days to remain home and contact a doctor.

The public health agency said it directly contacts those who could have been exposed. It notes symptoms begin seven to 21 days after infection.

The risk of getting measles in the region is low, according to Peel Public Health.
