We're celebrating the diversity of our community,' say parade organizers
Fifteen floats made their way down the newly-renamed Wıìlıìdeh Avenue on Sunday afternoon for the 2026 Yellowknife Pride Parade.
The event, organized by Yellowknife Pride and the Northern Mosaic Network, included a parade through downtown, followed by a free community barbecue, vendors and entertainment in Somba K’e Park.
“We're celebrating the diversity of our community and we're also just showing up to recognize that this community is resilient and we're still here,” said Tineke Kippers, one of the organizers of the parade and the mentorship and school supports co-ordinator with the Northern Mosaic Network.
“There's been opposition globally and locally to trans issues. So we just want to make sure that everybody feels loved and seen.”
In past years, the parade has taken place in June with additional events in August. This year, the two were combined into one big event.
For Chelsea Thacker, executive director of the Northern Mosaic Network, having the whole community come together in one celebration is important.
“I think visibility is the most important thing. As a young person, I know that the lack of visibility that I had in just knowing all of the different kinds of people that are in the world really impacted my own ability to self explore until a little bit later in life,” Thacker said.
“We should feel proud and able to walk around as our authentic selves and to celebrate that.”
