£750k upgrade works to begin on town car park

Work to upgrade a multi-storey car park in Loughborough is set to begin next week.

Both lifts in the Beehive Lane car park will be replaced as part of a £750,000 investment by Charnwood Borough Council, which owns and operates the site.

As part of the work, the top floor of the car park will also be resurfaced, the stairways retiled, and two additional electric vehicle charging points installed.

Liz Blackshaw, the council's lead member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: "This is a key investment in a car park at the centre of Loughborough which is vital in supporting our local economy and town centre businesses."

The lifts, which the council said were at the "end of life", and one stairwell will be closed from Monday as work begins, while two other stairwells will remain open.

The lifts are expected to be out of use for about five months, the council said, and work to replace them will cost in the region of £250,000.

It added that the ground floor of the car park would be prioritised for disabled and parent and child parking, alongside some electric vehicle charging bays.

Visitors are encouraged to park on higher floors and use the stairs if they are able to.

The authority said this was a temporary measure while work takes place.

The creation of two additional electric vehicle bays will bring the total number of charging points up to four.

These bays are also being expanded to make them more accessible for visitors.

The council added that there would be "minor disruption" to the bays while the new points are installed.
