Ruben Östlund's Buzzy New Film 'The Entertainment System Is Down' Won't Be Coming To Cannes 2026

Many have been frothing at the mouth over Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund‘s next feature film, “The Entertainment System Is Down,” starring Kirsten Dunst, Keanu Reeves, and Daniel Brühl. However, folks will have to be a little more patient as the movie that had been eyeing a debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival reportedly won’t be ready for screenings at the French event.

Deadline was the outlet behind this disappointing festival update about “The Entertainment System Is Down” delay, as they cite previous statements by Östlund from January that if the movie wasn’t ready for Cannes in 2026, he would “wait and edit one more year before we release the film”(assumed to premiere it at Cannes in 2027).

Although, despite those statements, we don’t know for sure if the acclaimed director will indeed hold the film back for an extra year, or simply look at other big festival events over the year instead. With the report made public, we’re sure that Östlund, at some point, will confirm a push to Cannes 2027 or not.

The anticipated movie is another darkly satirical film, which is “set on a long-haul flight between England and Australia where the entertainment system fails, and passengers are forced to face the horror of being bored.” Many believe the project may mirror his character-driven cruise ship effort “Triangle of Sadness,” but given the logline, we’re unlikely to see a plane crash (unless that is an element to be revealed within the film itself).
