Saudi Arabia positions itself as a global AI powerhouse

Saudi Arabia advances in the development of its artificial intelligence ecosystem with the launch of a new National Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework, presented by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), reports Servimedia. The initiative sets a common reference for public bodies and companies to incorporate this technology safely and responsibly, while the country accelerates its technological transformation in line with the Vision 2030 objectives.

The new framework establishes a unified national methodology that covers the entire risk management cycle: from defining the context and scope of each system to identifying and assessing potential risks, implementing measures to address them, and subsequent monitoring and review. It also proposes a matrix that combines the likelihood of a particular risk occurring with the extent of its impact, thus facilitating different organizations to evaluate and prioritize their actions under common criteria.

The initiative aims to adapt traditional technology management mechanisms to the particularities of artificial intelligence. With this new instrument, Saudi Arabia seeks to accompany the rapid growth of artificial intelligence with a governance model that allows for innovation while safeguarding people and institutions. The framework also reinforces the role of SDAIA as a national reference in data and artificial intelligence and provides applicable criteria to organizations with different levels of digital maturity.

The measure is integrated into the economic and technological transformation driven by Vision 2030, which positions digitization, innovation, and the development of new industries among the tools to diversify the Saudi economy. In recent years, the country has strengthened its infrastructure and technological capabilities and seeks to position itself as a competitive international hub for artificial intelligence, both through the development of its own solutions and capabilities and through international alliances.

Advances in technological governance will continue internationally in September, when Riyadh hosts the IV edition of the UNESCO World Forum on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which will be held from September 14 to 17. The forum will bring together policymakers, technology experts, representatives of international organizations, and executives from international companies to analyze how to harness the rapid development of AI while ensuring responsible and reliable use.

The meeting will address issues such as AI ethics and governance, responsible innovation, capacity building, and international cooperation, as well as the role these technologies can play in sustainable development and economic and social progress.

The holding of the meeting in Riyadh reinforces the international dimension of the Saudi strategy in artificial intelligence, combining investment and technological development with increasing participation in debates on standards, governance, and responsible use of emerging technologies.
