Startups and Major Corporations Join Forces as Nationwide Expansion of Renewable Energy Bidding System Faces Delays
A startup operating a renewable energy plant management platform invested 4 billion won (approximately $2.9 million) last year in replacing customer electricity meters, developing IT systems, and running servers. The investment was made in anticipation of the government's planned nationwide expansion of the renewable energy bidding system. However, with the implementation timeline still undetermined well past the original target, the company is gripped by concerns that its investment could turn into a complete loss. A company official said, "With the system schedule remaining uncertain, we face significant difficulties in establishing mid- to long-term business plans, including additional investments and customer contract signings."
This anxiety is spreading across the industry. Four renewable energy trading platform startups—Haezoom, Encored, H Energy, and VPPLab—delivered a joint letter to President Lee Jae-myung and Kim Sung-hwan, Minister of Climate, Energy and Environment, on the 2nd, together with the civic group Climate Solution. The letter urged the swift nationwide implementation of the renewable energy bidding system. According to industry sources on the 1st, major corporations including LG Energy Solution and KT also participated in sending the letter alongside the startups.
The renewable energy bidding system allows electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind power to be bid and sold one day before generation. Previously, only electricity from conventional sources such as thermal and nuclear power could be traded through bidding. As renewable energy output has grown, fluctuations in generation have increasingly burdened the power grid, prompting the push to introduce the system to enhance grid stability. It is expected to improve the efficiency of power grid operations by enabling more accurate forecasting of generation and demand.
