Victoria Tech Week turns city into showcase for local tech

Victoria’s tech sector will take centre stage next week as Victoria Tech Week brings 50 free events to venues across Greater Victoria.

The event, running Sept. 21 to 25, will feature workshops, panels, product demonstrations, networking events, open houses and mixers hosted by local technology companies and organizations.

Rather than holding the events under one roof, Victoria Tech Week will turn venues across the region into a showcase of the local tech industry. Events will range from AI workshops and funding panels downtown to marine technology demonstrations in the harbour and events at the University of Victoria.

The region’s technology sector generates nearly $6 billion annually, has an economic impact of nearly $8 billion and employs more than 20,000 people, according to organizers.

Victoria Innovation, Advanced Technology & Entrepreneurship Council (VIATEC) and Revenue Architect Marc Stoiber are organizing the week, which takes inspiration from similar events in Boulder, Seattle and New York.

Local companies will host events at their own facilities, while several “event hubs” will provide free space for organizations without their own venues. Participating hubs include Fort Tectoria, COAST Ocean Innovation Hub, Infusion Play, North House Victoria and UVic.

“Victoria’s tech sector doesn’t have gates or velvet ropes, it has open doors,” VIATEC CEO Dan Gunn said in a statement. “If you’ve ever wondered where you’d fit in this industry, Victoria Tech Week is your answer. Walk in, ask a question, and you’ll find you already belong here.”

The week’s events will also include a coffee crawl on golf carts, alongside opportunities to meet people working across the region’s technology sector.

VIATEC director of communications and events Tessa Davies said the event allows companies to showcase their work while opening their spaces to the broader community.

“Whether these free events are in a warehouse, co-working space, above a storefront or down an alley, it’s exciting to see our city in a different light, straight from the people doing the impressive work,” Davies said.
