Beauty spot inappropriate campers moved on

Numerous people camping inappropriately in the Lake District have been moved on over the summer, a council has revealed.

As part of its enforcement activity Cumberland Council officials "engaged with over 100 people", and in the last two weeks removed 10 campsites.

It has also issued a number of fixed penalty notices - in one case after a vehicle drive across a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI) to set up camp on a lake shore causing damage to the ground.

A public awareness campaign has also been launched to remind campers and visitors to leave no trace and take their litter home, with signs installed in locations such as Keswick and Wasdale.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council's executive member for sustainable, places, said: "Cumberland's landscapes and beauty spots are among our greatest assets, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

"While education and engagement remain our preferred approach, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action where advice is ignored and there is clear evidence of anti-social behaviour or environmental damage.

"Our message is simple - enjoy Cumberland responsibly, respect local communities and wildlife, and leave no trace behind."
