Gamer granny is oldest female Fortnite streamer in world record book

A 78-year-old Scottish grandmother has been named the world's oldest female Fortnite streamer by Guinness World Records.

Cath Bowie, from Moray, began playing the online shooter in 2017 and now has an audience of more than 24,000 followers.

She was introduced to the game by her grandson, who was 17 at the time, and says no-one is "ever too old to start gaming".

Known on Fortnite her username grumpygran1948, Cath features in the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2027.

Fortnite is one of the most popular video games in the world, putting up to 100 players against each other in a fight to be the last one standing.

Cath had tried video games before, but none fully sparked her interest until she discovered Fortnite.

"I was immediately hooked," she said.

She then bought her own console, but her grandson doubted she would grow a following as a streamer.

She said: "As a young guy, he just couldn't believe that his grandma would do such a thing and suggested that nobody would join me or watch me.

"Saying that was like a red rag to a bull to me. I would show him that I could do it.

"Twenty four thousand followers later and he doesn't mention it. I wonder why?"

Cath said she loves the challenge the game gives her and plays it every day.

She told the BBC's Radio Scotland Breakfast programme: "It's a lovely, lovely game. The one I play is Battle Royale Last Man Standing and you go into it either as a solo, duo or squad.

"You're trying to get the better of your opponents and eliminate them.

"But there's no blood on the scene - you just shoot somebody and they either crawl about until they die or they're just obliterated with the one shot. So there isn't any mess - nothing like that."

Cath said the community of people playing the game was more important than the game itself.

"I play with some wonderful folk - from the UK, quite a few from the USA, from Canada, New Zealand and Australia," she said.

"It's super meeting all these folk. The chat we have, it's lovely - I've had folk with me for quite a few years now."
