House of Commons committee meeting around Gordie Howe bridge revenue
House of Commons committee meeting around Gordie Howe bridge revenue-sharing with U.S.
The standing committee set to discuss the deal Wednesday afternoon in Ottawa
A House of Commons committee will hold a special meeting Wednesday about the Gordie Howe International Bridge, as Ottawa faces more questions about tweaks it made to its revenue-sharing agreement with the U.S.
The meeting — set to start at 1:30 p.m., according to the House’s website — is expected to be mostly administrative, with MPs set to discuss the scope of the study and a list of witnesses.
What's inside the new Gordie Howe bridge deal?
The bridge linking Windsor, Ont., with Detroit, Mich., and which Canada footed the cost of building it, finally opened this week — months later than planned.
The proposed agreement in principle to open it says Canada will share half of net toll revenues with the U.S. for the next 15 years, while Ottawa’s original 2012 deal was for sharing toll revenue with the state of Michigan many years down the road.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Mark Carney says he "imperfectly" described the new deal to open the crossing after the text of the agreement appeared to contradict his original explanation.
